Brain Health Q & A

What is brain health?

Your brain is a powerful organ that controls every part of your body. That's why brain injury and illnesses can have a significant impact on your quality of life. These health problems can affect your ability to work, stay active, and enjoy time with your family.

If you're struggling with health problems that affect your brain, treatment can help. Dr. Shine works with her patients to identify issues with brain health and restore healthy cognitive function.

What health conditions can affect my brain health?

Your brain is an essential part of your body. As a result, physical and mental illnesses can affect brain function in many ways. Symptoms of poor brain health may include:

  • Brain "fog"
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Mood changes
  • Sleep problems
  • Memory problems
  • Cognitive decline

Health problems that can affect your brain health include:

  • Concussion
  • Traumatic head injury
  • Mental illness
  • Addiction
  • Chronic pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sleep disorders
  • Learning disabilities
  • Migraines
  • Gastrointestinal (GI) problems

The toll on cognitive health from these conditions can sometimes be debilitating. Neurofeedback therapy eases your symptoms by correcting abnormal brain wave patterns.

Dr. Shine uses neurofeedback to help her patients restore mental and cognitive sharpness and relieve emotional distress.

What is neurofeedback therapy?

Neurofeedback therapy is a scientifically-proven biofeedback technique. Over time, it provides relief from stressful or debilitating symptoms.

Treatment is noninvasive and can be performed in Dr. Shine's office. No surgery or pharmaceuticals are required. Neurofeedback therapy is safe for most people, regardless of their age or medical history.

How does neurofeedback therapy work?

Your brain continually produces electrical energy. This energy can be categorized into four different frequency bands:

  • Alpha brain waves (relaxed or reflecting)
  • Beta brain waves (alert or working)
  • Theta brain waves (drowsy or meditative)
  • Delta brain waves (sleeping or dreaming)

Throughout the day, your brain waves naturally shift between frequencies. However, sometimes your brain may experience too much or not enough of specific frequencies.

Neurofeedback therapy is designed to restore healthy brain function. It gradually improves your brain's ability to shift between frequency bands.

In her practice, Dr. Shine uses the Clear Mind Neurofeedback System. This software maps your brain and creates a customized treatment plan to correct any imbalances.

The number of sessions you need may vary. Dr. Shine will work with you to determine a treatment plan and the improvement you can expect.
