EMSELLA® in Pasadena, CA

Are you tired of the “got to go” feeling? Incontinence impacts 25 million adult Americans, and of that 25 million, 75-80% are women.

If you find yourself avoiding long family car or plane rides, mapping out your day around bathroom locations or breaks, or getting poor sleep due to waking up at night to urinate, Shine Health and Wellness is here to help.

Under the guidance of board-certified family medicine physician Dr. Kimberley Shine, we offer EMSELLA®. This revolutionary service can significantly enhance your quality of life and help you regain your confidence.

What is Incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is defined as the involuntary leakage of urine. There are three different types of urinary incontinence:

  • Stress incontinence occurs when increased pressure on the bladder causes leakage. This can be caused by coughing, laughing, sneezing, or exercising.
  • Urge incontinence is the sudden, intense urge to urinate frequently.
  • Mixed incontinence is a combination of both stress and urge incontinence.

What Causes Urinary Incontinence?

Urinary incontinence may be caused by weakened pelvic floor muscles, which support the organs in the pelvic floor, such as the bladder. Menopause, vaginal and cesarean births, and obesity can weaken the pelvic floor muscles.

Strong pelvic floor muscles give you control of your bladder and bowel. Weakened pelvic floor muscles mean your internal organs are not fully supported, and you may have difficulty controlling the release of urine.

Challenges With Common Urinary Incontinence Treatments

You may have been told to do Kegel exercises daily, which probably didn’t work because you cannot build enough muscle this way to see improvement. Alternatively, you may have been offered medications to decrease the amount of urine you produce, but these usually have side effects that people don’t want. Perhaps pelvic floor therapy can help, but it may take more than 12 weeks to see improvement. Surgery may have also been offered, but the long-term improvements are not ideal.

How Is EMSELLA Different?

EMSELLA utilizes a high-frequency electromagnet to strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, increasing their size and enabling better control. This technology also reduces the sensitivity of nerves in and around the bladder, which decreases the intensity of the feeling you experience when you need to urinate.

How Long Does EMSELLA Treatment Last?

Each EMSELLA treatment takes around 30 minutes. Most patients visit twice a week for approximately three weeks and then return quarterly for maintenance sessions, if necessary.

What Does an EMSELLA Treatment Feel Like?

You will feel the muscles of the pelvic floor contracting as you sit on the EMSELLA chair. There is no downtime, and you can return to your previous tasks immediately after.

How Soon Will I See Results?

You may see results after a single session, with improvements typically continuing over the 3-week treatment period.

Is EMSELLA FDA-Approved?

Yes, the EMSELLA device is approved by the FDA for urge, stress, and mixed incontinence types.
